Hypnosis is a pleasant, natural state of physical and mental relaxation which is naturally experienced on a daily basis by everyone.

It is a deep state of relaxation similar to the state that you enter into every night just before you fall asleep or in the morning when you awaken. It  occurs when you are daydreaming, or driving to work and when you get there you don't remember driving there.

Hypnotherapy is the process by which the conscious mind is distracted long enough for the continuous mind chatter to stop, so that the subconscious mind may be influenced with direct suggestions. As the subconscious is the decider of what the mind and body will act upon, it is necessary to work directly with the subconscious.

What the mind believes, the body will follow.

The conscious mind is that part of the mind that is used to hear, see and think about WHAT it is we are experiencing in our conscious day to day activity. It’s that part of our mind that is critical, analytical and judgmental. It’s the ‘me’ part of a person’s mind.

The subconscious mind is that part of our mind that directs and conducts HOW we think and feel based on past experience. It is where every experience is stored from the moment of birth.

We can compare it to an ice berg – the conscious mind is the part that is visible above water, the subconscious being the greater part under the surface.

The first useful thing to distinguish is the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy. I really want you to understand that there is a big difference between the act of hypnotizing someone (hypnosis) and the amazing changes that can happen with the help of a qualified hypnotherapist (hypnotherapy).

I hope that after you read this section you will never confuse a stage hypnotist (the person you see getting laughs on TV) with a hypnotherapist (the person who helps you stop smoking, lose weight, or recover from a life-long phobia).

  • Hypnosis is a state of mind connected to deep relaxation, narrowed focus, and increased suggestibility. Hypnosis is an intermediate state between sleep and wakefulness. Hypnosis can be likened to the state you are in when you act intuitively instead of intellectually. During hypnosis, you basically ask your inner drill sergeant to take a break while your clever, artistic self comes forward. And believe me, everybody 
    has both aspects within themselves.
  • Hypnotherapy is hypnosis used for therapeutic purposes. Hypnotherapy applies the technique of hypnosis to encourage your unconscious mind to find solutions to problems. Hypnosis is a state of consciousness. Hypnotherapy is a therapy. Hypnosis itself is not therapy. The therapy part of a hypnotherapy session occurs after hypnosis has been used to induce your trance. Then the hypnotherapist makes suggestions that help your unconscious mind achieve your goals or remove your problems.
